The metallurgical industry is the industrial sector dedicated to extracting metals or metal compounds from minerals (ores) and processing them into metal materials with specific properties. It is primarily divided into two major categories: ferrous metallurgy and non-ferrous metallurgy. The ferrous metallurgy industry mainly produces iron, chromium, manganese, and their alloys (such as pig iron, steel, and ferroalloys), while the non-ferrous metallurgy industry produces all other metals-excluding ferrous metals-such as copper, aluminum, lead, zinc, nickel, cobalt, tin, precious metals, and rare metals. Other sub-sectors include powder metallurgy and rare metal metallurgy. Key metallurgical technologies include pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, and electrometallurgy. The metallurgical industry chain is a vast and complex system encompassing stages ranging from raw material acquisition (mining and preliminary processing of ores, concentrates, scrap steel, etc.) and the supply of energy and auxiliary materials (coal, electricity, coke, limestone, etc.) to the manufacturing of semi-finished products (steel rolling, casting, forging, etc.), the production of metal goods, and end-use applications.
